The Scribe Academy
Responsible AI Use in K-12 Education
Effective Date: December 2024
The Scribe Academy is committed to the ethical, transparent, and responsible use of artificial intelligence in education. We believe AI should enhance learning while protecting student privacy, promoting fairness, and maintaining human oversight. This statement outlines our principles and practices for AI use in compliance with California SB 1288 and emerging AI safety standards.
Student data is never used to train AI models. All AI interactions are processed in real-time and not retained for model improvement. Student privacy is paramount.
We clearly disclose when AI is being used. Students and educators understand that "Professor Eldred" is an AI character providing automated feedback, not a human teacher.
AI feedback supplements, but does not replace, human instruction. Teachers maintain full control over student progress and can review all AI-generated content.
We actively work to identify and mitigate bias in AI outputs. Our prompts are designed to provide equitable feedback regardless of student background, writing style, or topic choice.
AI interactions are designed specifically for K-12 students with appropriate language, encouragement, and educational focus. Content filters prevent inappropriate outputs.
The Scribe Academy explicitly commits to the following:
| Service | Purpose | Data Handling |
|---|---|---|
| Google Gemini API | Writing feedback, topic generation, essay evaluation | Real-time processing only; no retention for training |
| Google Cloud TTS | Text-to-speech accessibility | Audio generated on-demand; no content retention |
Per Google's API Terms of Service, data submitted through the Gemini API is not used to train Google's foundation models. We use the API in a manner consistent with educational use and student privacy requirements.
Prompt Engineering: AI prompts are carefully designed to provide objective, constructive feedback focused on writing skills rather than content opinions.
Rubric-Based Evaluation: AI feedback follows standardized writing rubrics (organization, evidence, clarity) to ensure consistent evaluation criteria.
Diverse Topic Support: The system supports a wide range of writing topics and perspectives without penalizing particular viewpoints.
Human Review: Teachers can review and override AI feedback. AI scores are for gamification and learning, not official grades.
Continuous Improvement: We monitor AI outputs for potential bias and update prompts and guardrails as needed.
Content Filtering: AI outputs are filtered to prevent inappropriate, harmful, or age-inappropriate content.
Encouraging Tone: AI feedback is designed to be constructive, encouraging, and supportive of student learning.
No Personal Advice: AI does not provide personal, medical, legal, or counseling advice to students.
Educator Oversight: All AI interactions are logged and available for teacher/admin review.
